Lesson 2 - Objectives

From the study design:

  • The genetic code as a universal triplet code that is degenerate and the steps in gene expression, including transcription, RNA processing in eukaryotic cells and translation by ribosomes

By the end of this lesson you should be able to...

  • Outline the steps of transcription
  • Define the role of RNA polymerase
  • Know what the start and stop signals are for transcription
    (promoter + terminator sequence)
  • Determine the mRNA strand if given the template or coding strand
  • Identify the 3 types of RNA processing (post-transcriptional modifications
      • Intron splicing
      • 5′ methyl cap
      • 3′ poly A tail
  • Compare introns and exons
